The Approach
The Healthy Lifestyle Approach Philosophy

The Healthy Lifestyle Approach is rooted in the belief that there are several factors that contribute to your success in meeting your fitness and weight management goals. The belief is that to make positive lasting changes, it is imperative that you strive to find balance between certain components of your life that affect your ability to increase your fitness level and reach your weight management goals. Although incorporating healthy eating habits and physical activity into your life are part of the focus in the approach, they are not the only components addressed. There is a belief that there is interconnectedness between the main components that are part of this approach. Making changes within each component, in a way that they contribute to your ability to reach your fitness and weight management goals, is the core focus of the approach.

The Components

How The Approach Was Created
The Healthy Lifestyle Approach was created by someone who knows, first hand, what it is like to struggle with reaching fitness and weight management goals. Erica, our Certified Personal Trainer and Lifestyle & Weight Management Consultant, was inspired by her own personal journey from morbid obesity to fit and healthy to want to help others reach their own fitness and weight management goals. She has taken lessons that she learned on her journey, coupled with the knowledge she gained while obtaining her certifications, to create The Healthy Lifestyle Approach.  If you want to learn more about Erica's personal journey click here.

The Approach Details
Nutrition
This component is one of the two that are traditionally addressed when someone is trying to reach fitness and weight management goals. We believe that it one that needs to be addressed as well, so that it why it is included. The Healthy Lifestyle Approach believes in a nutrition approach that is based on a well balanced intake of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nonfat/ reduced fat dairy, and lean protein sources. We will provide general feedback on your food intake as well as provide you with educational resources on how to improve your nutrition. Our approach also encourages you to follow a 90-10 principle, meaning 90% of what you eat should be unprocessed/minimally processed. Having that 10% allows for treats every once in a while and keeps you from feeling deprived of things you like but shouldn't eat very often.

Physical Activity
This is the second of the two that are traditionally addressed when someone is trying to reach fitness and weight management goals. Again, we also believe it is one that needs to be addressed. The Healthy Lifestyle Approach refers to the physical activity guidelines outlined by American College of Sports Medicine when designing your personalized exercise program.

Self Efficiency
This component is focused on health specific self-efficacy, which is a person's optimistic self-belief about being capable to resist temptations and to adopt a healthy lifestyle. When the The Healthy Lifestyle Approach is used the goal for this component is to include specific experiences that have the potential to increase your health specific self-efficacy.

Social Support
There have been countless studies that have shown that social support plays a very important part in successfully achieving fitness and weight management goals. The Healthy Lifestyle Approach takes this into consideration as well. Our trainer/consultant will educate you about ways to build a strong support system, as well as be a member of your support system.

Stress Management
We see interconnectedness between stress management and fitness and weight management. When you are managing your stress well you have more energy and time to focus on your fitness and weight management goals. Also, we are sure you have heard that physical activity is an excellent stress management strategy. The Healthy Lifestyle Approach will encourage you to build several stress management techniques into your lifestyle including using physical activity.

Emotional Wellness
The Healthy Lifestyle Approach creator saw that there was a huge connection between her emotional wellness and her ability to be successful in reaching her fitness and weight management goals. Once she was able to manage her mind/body connection with healthier coping strategies she found the emotional roadblocks were much easier to conquer. The Healthy Lifestyle Approach will encourage you to explore your own mind/body connection and provide you with resources on how to go about developing strategies to manage your emotional wellness.

Sleep
We are sure you have all seen the countless reports on sleep's connection to weight regulation over the past few years. Sadly, a large majority of us are not getting the right amount of sleep we need to avoid those consequences. The Healthy Lifestyle Approach will encourage you to work towards developing better sleep habits so that sleep is helping your efforts not hindering them.
